learning programming in MATA

I want to learn to program in MATA, there is some tutorial or book also MATA REFERENCE MANUAL.

There are several things you may want to start with.

1. A talk "Mata, the missing manual" given by Bill Gould talking about Mata, which provides a brief outline about Mata, including Mechanics of including Mata code, Appropriate and inappropriate use of Mata, Mata concepts, Examples and Debugging. 2. A book "Introduction to Stata Programming" by Christopher F. Baum. This book assumes only that the user is familiar with Stata, so the author builds up accordingly. For the more advanced Stata programmer, the book introduces Stata’s Mata programming language and provides optimization tips for day-to-day work. 3. Articles about Mata in Stata Journal.

There is also this talk by Bill Gould (http://ideas.repec.org/p/boc/asug05/22.html). It's almost 10 years old, but still a good intro. There is a very nice discussion about how to make copies of your data into the Mata environment. Note that it works within Stata.

I find 'The missing manual' quite advanced for a beginner, but it is useful. So maybe start with the talk I mentionned and the book by Kit Baum. Otherwise the intro in the Mata manual is pretty good. If you google "stata mata" you might also find some talks Kit Baum has given about Mata.

In addition to the previously mentioned resources, I found several of the examples presented in Cameron and Trivedi's "Microeconometrics using Stata" to be quite useful in learning how to program as well.
