merging data from Compustat and CRSP

I am new to Stata and appreciate any help. I want to merge data from Compustat and with CRSP. Now, I have the "likned table from WRDS which has the PERMNO, CUSIP, and other data. In my Compustat data, I have the CUSIP (9 digits and 8 digits) as identifier. I tried to use the "combine datasets" in Stata to merge these data using CUSIP, but it did not work.
I highly appreciate if someone can help me doing this merge.
