This is a warning to other users of Stata for Mac, not a request for help solving a problem.
I run Stata/SE 13.1 for Mac (64-bit Intel) Revision 19 Dec 2014 on a MacBook Air running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2. In the Variables window, I had filtered the list of 5000+ variables in my dataset to search for a particular variable. It was not displayed in the window. I thought it was missing from the dataset.
Eventually I cleared the filter and scrolled back up to the top of the list of variables and realized the first four variables in the dataset were hidden off the top of the Variables window. If I clicked on the topmost variable in the displayed list, I could use the left arrow icon at the top of the Properties window to back up to the first variable in the dataset, which nevertheless was still hidden from view in the Variables window. And when I put the filter back, I was able to find the "missing variable" I was looking for -- it was the first of seven matches, of which only the final three were displayed in the Variables window.
This wasn't a problem in the Variables Manager. And it wasn't a problem when I cleared my data and created a dataset with one observation and 20 variables - the first 10 showed in the Variables window. And it wasn't a problem when I took the original dataset to an iMac running the same version of Stata on OS X Mavericks version 10.9.5. And it ceased being a problem for me after I rebooted the MacBook Air. At least, it ceased for now.
There are known OS X windowing bugs in Yosemite that have been allowed by Apple to survive into the 10.10.2 release that I have experienced elsewhere, but this bug was new to me. A colleague who only slowly adopts new features in Stata told me it wouldn't have been a problem: des varname would nicely display in the log the info about the variable that I was looking for in the Variables and Properties windows. Something to be said for the simple approach.
