Could not move StataMP to StataMP_old.app

Hi everyone,

While trying to run -update all-, I get the following error:

installing executable files ...
Could not move StataMP to StataMP_old.app
r(695);

I changed the permissions on StataMP to read/write and it seemed to be working but now I get a new error:

installing executable files ...
Could not move StataMP_old to StataMP_old2.app
r(695);

Does anyone have any clue about what might be going on?

Heather, the StataMP_old is a backup copy of the executable of Stata, that is created during an update. You may want to manually move the backup files to another folder before running an update. Also make sure that you have the permissions to update Stata. If not, you will be getting these messages and only the system admin will be able to help.

I can't tell from this whether you changed the permissions on the directory into which Stata is installed (e.g., /Applications/Stata) or on the application bundle itself (e.g., /Applications/Stata/StataMP.app). I believe that the application bundle (StataMP.app) is moved to StataMP_old.app during the update process, and for that, you need write and execute permissions on the enclosing directory (i.e., /Applications/Stata). For example, on my machine, the file permissions in /Applications/Stata look like this:

I would strongly suggest contacting Stata technical support for help with this. It's not that people on this list can't help, but in principle, you shouldn't have problems installing Stata, and if you do (and especially if you've tried to modify file permissions, etc. to try and fix the problem), it's probably going to be most efficient to talk to someone with experience in helping users troubleshoot these types of problems (e.g., they know what types of questions to ask you). You shouldn't have to spend time and get frustrated with this.
