How to put photo on profile

I notice that some users have photos of themselves showing with their posts. How did you do this? I've searched the FAQs but not managed to find how.

Click on your username (top right-hand corner of the page), choose the My Profile menu item, and mouse over the empty picture. When the Edit Avatar link pops up, click on it.
