  • Automatic signon

    1. Is there any way to set up the forum so that when I come to it it automatically signs me in; i.e. Instead of me putting in my user name and password, it happens automatically. Quite a few forums have this feature and it speeds things up if you come to the forum several times a day -- which may happen in times of extreme boredom, or when I have asked a question and want to see if anyone has sent an answer.

    2. I think this new forum is a good idea.

It already has this feature, implemented via one or more cookies stored in your browser. If this is not working for you, then it may be that your browser is configured to refuse or toss cookies from the site. I would suggest reviewing the preference settings for your browser.

I have the same request as Don. As Phil Schumm suggested, I checked my browser configuration regarding cookies. It's shown in the screen shot shown at http://screencast.com/t/rkMNiygr . This default is enforced by the Group policies of the Windows network at my workplace. I'm no expert on this sort of thing, but does this configuration mean no auto-sign on is possible?
[PS I tried to paste the screenshot directly into the message window, but the picture didn't show up as legible in the message Preview; hence the link]

Make sure when signing in to click the "Remember me" checkbox that appears with the other login information. If that isn't checked, your session will expire after a short period of inactivity.

I have the same problem, whereby the forum keeps signing me out despite ticking the "remember me" checkbox and allowing cookies. This is on Firefox 28.0 for Mac. Once signed out the browser doesn't remember my password so I have to type everything in again - quite inconvenient. I have disallowed third-party cookies, but even when I temporarily allowed them I had the same problem.

Dear Alan: the "Remember Me" checkbox has been ticked in all my attempts to implement auto sign-in

Yes, I still cannot automatically sign on, even if I click Remember Me. I do notice that when I click remember me and signon, the password blanks out BEFORE going back to the forum, so maybe there is something in my browser (MAC Mavericks, Chrome) that removes the password after signon, but before remember.
In a way I am glad that others are having the problem. I was beginning to think it was me, and my ignorance about how to do what should be a simple thing.

I have the same problem on Firefox 24.0, Windows 7 64-bit (I'm not allowed to update my browser because of "security reasons", however contradictory that results.) My browser settings are below.

                Attached Files
                You should:

                1. Read the FAQ carefully.

                2. "Say exactly what you typed and exactly what Stata typed (or did) in response. N.B. exactly!"

                3. Describe your dataset. Use list to list data when you are doing so. Use input to type in your own dataset fragment that others can experiment with.

                4. Use the advanced editing options to appropriately format quotes, data, code and Stata output. The advanced options can be toggled on/off using the A button in the top right corner of the text editor.

Same in Chrome (33.0.xxxx): expires much faster than I would like.

Same thing in Safari (latest version) on my Mac. I definitely have allowed cookies, so that's not it. For me, thanks to icloud password keychain, it is not a huge deal (password already filled in for me by the OS), but still a small hurdle to get into the forum each time.

We have reproduced this and are working with vBulletin support to resolve it. I'll post an update when we know more.

Likewise, if I tell Safari "block 3rd party cookies->never", it still prompts me every single time for username and password, and ignores the 'remember me' checkbox. This is quite surprising, as even with 3rd party cookies disabled, Safari remembers usernames (and if allowed, passwords) to dozens of other sites I visit. This very annoying feature, coupled with the cumbersome navigation, leads me to think that I will not give much attention to this site compared to my checking out the contents of Statalist-Digest every day.

I use Windows 7 and Firefox 28 so I will just add, me too. It is kind of amazing how things that eat up 5 or 10 seconds of your life can be so annoying.

We believe we traced the source of the issue and have solved it. "Remember Me" should work properly for future login sessions.
