This dataset is about the taxes that firms paid, by year and by activity sector.
The first variable is the activity sector, the second variable is the specific activity of the firm, the third variable is the number of firms in the specific activity sector that are active and did pay taxes, the fourth variable is the year (here, it is either 2022 or 2023), the fifth variable is the Local Turnover without taxes, the sixth variable is the Exportation Turnover, the seventh variable is the Total Turnover with Taxes, the eigth variable is the Taxes to pay, the ninth is the total fiscal benefit, and the last variable is the total taxable benefit.

My goal here is to have the number of firms by the activity sector (the first variable), for each year. I've tried to use the "Total" command, but I guess it didn't work. I just want the result to be displayed on Stata, not to create a new variable. The goal is to sum up the "the number of firms in the specific activity sector" (third variable) by year (the fourth variable) and by activity sector (first variable).

Any help please?

Well, I can't think of a way to list this in the Results window without creating a variable. But you can always drop the variables after listing the results if you don't want them.

My guess is that your problem with the table command is that you are using an older version of Stata, 16 or earlier.

The syntax is for the updated table command (Stata 17+). Use Clyde's method for earlier versions.

Use additional twoway options to customize the appearance of the graph to your needs.

Re #5, 6, 7:
In version 16 or earlier you can do this as

table Secteur_dactivité Exercice_IS_Anneé, c(sum Nombre) row col

By the way, please note that in the Forum FAQ, you are asked to always state what version of Stata you are using if it is not the current version (which, as of this writing, is 18). Make it your habit to do that whenever you start a thread unless (until) at some point you move to the current version. You never know what will change between versions, and getting responses based on a version later than what you have just wastes both your time and the time of those who tried to help you.

#10 #11 No guessing needed. The table syntax introduced in Stata 17 as used by Clyde Schechter won't work in earlier versions.

Coming back to a bar chart with year too, I used the data example in #1 with this code (borrowing heavily from Clyde's code in #2)

Notes:

tabplot is from the Stata Journal.

I reduced the use of upper case in your sector names. I didn't fix missing accents.

Much depends on how many sectors and how many years you have in your full data. My guess is that the first design will extend better than the second. but that's for you to find out.

You can of course vary colours, exact text and so forth.
