  • Running Stata on Windows with ARM processors

    Hi everyone,

I'm considering buying the new Surface Laptop with an ARM processor running Windows. However, I'm aware that Stata currently lacks compatibility with this environment. Has anyone tried using Stata with an x86 emulator on a similar setup? How does it affect performance? Do you think StataCorp might release an official version for ARM processors on Windows machines in the near future?

    Many thanks!

I came across Francesco's question on 2/22/2025 and did not spot any responses. Apologies if I missed them. Using the emulation layer, I have encountered no problems running StataNow 18.5 on my Lenovo Yoga Slim 7, which uses a Snapdragon X Elite CPU. I have clocked performance using Felix Bittmann's -benchmark- ado, comparing the Yoga 7 with a Mac Mini m4 as well as a Windows 11 NUC using an Intel Core i7-8809G CPU. The ado completes eight different tasks. The cumulative times from a single run on each machine on 2/21/2025 were Yoga 7: 1112 seconds; NUC: 1175; and Mac: 410. My Stata license is 4-core; where applicable, the ado uses multiple cores. The NUC is six years old; I claim nothing from the comparisons, but can make details available if there is interest.
