Being accustomed to use the old StataList I am struggling a bit using the new StataList Forum as efficiently as I have been used to previously.
Therefore, I very much appreciate the post by Alan Riley (see http://www.statalist.org/forums/foru...=1599#post1599 ) in the General Forum thread "Gentle resister" (see http://www.statalist.org/forums/foru...entle-resister ). For those who never used any fora at all (not to speak of apps which seem to replace programs - I still don't know whether there is any difference) the Stata Forums are a major change of following discussions, reading, searching, and responding to a discussion. I learned a lot from this post which I did not recognize when reading the Forum Software FAQ ( http://www.statalist.org/forums/help#gfaq_forumsoftware ). For example, I would have never found out the functionality of the "Go to first new post" icon (#4 in Alan's post) or the "Mark this channel read" icon (#5 in Alan's post).
Having read Alan's post I wonder what else I might miss. For example, only by accident I found out that it is possible not only to refer to a thread (topic? you see, I am struggling with the new language that comes with it) but also directly to a single post (reply) by copying the link behind the #.. shown in top right corner of a post. Other issues involve writing new posts and accidentally losing all that has been written (but not yet sent) only because you used your browser to show a different page (using my old mailing program this never happened).
Thus, I whish somebody could set up a set of instructions (perhaps linking to a youtube video) specifically created for old StataList users showing the new tricks of the trade - and assuming *no* experiences with fora / email apps / ... at all. This collection should also contain a set of example posts showing how to quote, how to refer to Stata command code, how to use BBCode, how to insert graphs etc. And among others, I would also like to know how to mark an interesting post to retrieve it any time later (it happend that I couldn't relocate a post even by using the search facilities of the forum).
With all this, I see a chance that gentle resisters will mutate into gentle supporters.
