  • Convert Latitude Longitude Coordinates to FIPS County codes

    Dear all,
I am new to Stata and am trying to convert thousands of longitudinal/latitude data into FIPS codes so I can merge datasets that are sorted by FIPS codes.

I know I need to "geocode" or something but I've been searching the web for hours now and have found nothing helpful.
Also, I don't know any other programming languages so a Stata based solution would be great.

    Any help appreciated,

    Sincerely,
    A frustrated undergrad

I'd suggest check with your library, or departments such as urban planning or geography and see if they have a GIS lab that can help you.

Use search geocode in Stata may lead you to some downloadable packages, but I am not sure which one provides FIPS. Need some exploration.

Third party like https://www.geocod.io can also simply perform some geocoding. A free account can do 2,500 entries a day. You can export your latitude and longitude into a csv file, and upload it to the server. And when you are going through the process, append the data with Census geography data set and it would get you the state FIPS.
