  • Stata 18 on a Windows machine

Is there any reason that Stata keeps on reading the values from the Windows registry multiple times per second even when Stata is at rest (started, but awaits user input)?

Windows periodically tells applications to update their UI elements such as toolbar buttons, status bars, and menu items. In this case, the toolbar button used to launch the Do-file Editor is being asked to update itself and Stata is using this opportunity to set the tooltip/description for the button based on a preference value which requires reading from the registry. However, we can make changes so that getting this value doesn’t require constantly reading from the registry.

      Hello Chinh Nguyen (StataCorp) ,

thank you very much for explaining. My concern was primarily because of seeing "NAME NOT FOUND" message and suspecting that somehow something is missing or not set up correctly, and Stata is trying to get access to the thing it needs, being denied (e.g. by some policy setting), and trying to reacquire in an endless loop.

From your explanation I see that this is not what's going on.

However, we can make changes so that getting this value doesn’t require constantly reading from the registry.
      That would be great!

      Thank you, Sergiy
