  • Do-files side-by-side?

    Dear Stata-list,

It's sometimes useful to be able to see two do-files side-by-side (either on the same screen or on separate screens). It would have been nice if "New Do-file Editor" (Ctrl+9) in Stata actually meant a new window and not just a new tab overlapping the currently displayed do-file. I've only found two workarounds, and neither one is very good:

    1. Run two instances of Stata in parallel, and open one do-file in each. It works, but just seems clumsy. And it's inconvenient if I want to run segments of each do-file on the same dataset.
    2. Open one of the do-files in an external editor. Inconvenient to have different interfaces, especially for comparing two versions of the same do-file.

If there a way of viewing two do-files at the same time within a single instance of Stata, that I have missed? Or does anyone have a better workaround?

    Many thanks!
    Jorgen

In the do file editor, if you open two .do files, than you by default get two tabs. If you grab one of these tabs and drag it into the main editor window and than let go, you get a little menu that lets you choose between a new vertical or new horizontal tab group. Choose one of these depending on your preferences (and monitor size).
