Hi everyone,
Thank you to Kit Baum for adding povguide2 to the archive. I hope people find it to be useful.
You'll find a brief description below.
Introduction:
This is an extension of the original Stata module POVGUIDE by David Kantor written to include guideline data from 2009-2023, whereas the original module stopped at 2008. Moreover, we have added the official guideline data for Alaska and Hawaii. The FIPS code argument is optional. When omitted, the command defaults to the poverty guideline for the 48 contiguous states only. When specified, poverty guidelines for Alaska and Hawaii are generated for FIPS codes 2 and 15, with the standard poverty guidelines for all others.
Original module: https://econpapers.repec.org/softwar...de/s456935.htm
Data from: https://aspe.hhs.gov/topics/poverty-...rty-guidelines
Data for pre-1983 comes from Annual Statistical Supplement to the Social Security Bulletin, table 3.E8 e.g.https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/stat...pplement14.pdf
For additional details see: Fisher, Gordon M. "Poverty Guidlines for 1992." Soc. Sec. Bull. 55 (1992): 43.
Description:
povguide2 generates a numeric variable representing the official U.S. poverty guideline. Supports years 1973-2023, plus guideline values for Alaska and Hawaii.
Options:
gen(newvar) specifies the name of a new variable to be generated, which will contain the poverty guideline (in U.S. dollars). By default is will be of an integer type, typically int.
famsize(famsize) specifies an expression representing the family size. It will be truncated to an integer and bottom-coded at 1 (values below 1 will be coerced to 1).
year(year) specifies an expression representing the year for which the computation is to be made. It will be truncated to an integer. Presently, the acceptable values are 1973-2023. Out-of-bounds values will result in a warning and missing values in the result.
[fips(fips)] optionally specifies the FIPS code for the state. When omitted, the command defaults to the poverty guideline for the 48 contiguous states only. When specified, poverty guidelines for Alaska and Hawaii are generated codes 2 and 15, with the standard poverty guidelines for all others.
Examples:
Generates using a single year as input.
Generates using a year variable as input.
Generates using a year variable and a state FIPS code variable. Will generate Alaska and Hawaii table values if those FIPS codes appear in the data.
Thanks!
