  • Using encoded nominal data

    Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and looking for some advice for a university project.
I'm using secondary data from a survey and the variables I'm using are nominal data. I want to keep the data nominal for my descriptive statistics e.g. bar charts but also encode them for chi-squared analysis later on. Am I able to keep both nominal and numeric copies of the same variable on the same dataset on STATA, or will I just have to encode them once I have done my descriptives?
Also the nominal data is in French (oui/non instead of yes/no). Is there a way to easily translate this into English?

    Thank you for any help

Stata doesn't have any notion that a variable is nominal (or ordinal, or interval, or ratio).

Having an encoded numeric variable should be fine for basic graphs and tables, chi-square tests and so forth. If you run into problems with either, you need to tell us more, chiefly by giving us a data example and showing the code you tried.

There is no translation inbuilt in Stata.
