For my thesis I am trying to examine the effects of military expenditure on human development. My idea is to create a panel data study with approximately 15-30 countries spanning a 30 year time period, with the countries selected from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds in different regions. I have put my data into Stata and created a mixed dataset containing the values for military spending (using the proportion of military expenditure as a % of GDP) and human development (using the Human Development Index(HDI)). However, I am puzzled by which steps to take next, I have never done a large research project like this before and I am feeling a little out of my depth.
I understand this is a broad question with a very specific knowledge base, however on the off chance that someone has any useful insights on what I can do from here it would be much appreciated, as I am really starting to panic. Any advice would be appreciated, either from a Stata or Economics perspective (or both!) but I am just craving any information which will help me to proceed from here.
