  • survey weights

    Hi,
I'm using the NHANES dataset from 2007 to 2017, and I want to use the sampling weights. However, NHANES mentions that the weights have to be used starting 2011. So, a subsample of my dataset needs to take the weights on. I'd appreciate any insight into how I can do this.

ps: I'm pretty much new to the survey datasets. I'd appreciate relatively comprehensive explanations.

    Thanks,

Even in the 2007 data, variables that are needed for complex survey weight adjustment are available in the DEMO file (see https://wwwn.cdc.gov/Nchs/Nhanes/2007-2008/DEMO_E.htm):
    • WTINT2YR - Full Sample 2 Year Interview Weight
    • WTMEC2YR - Full Sample 2 Year MEC Exam Weight
    • SDMVPSU - Masked Variance Pseudo-PSU
    • SDMVSTRA - Masked Variance Pseudo-Stratum
If you are pretty much new to the survey data, then check out the tutorial series made by NHANES. For example, this one: https://wwwn.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes/tutorials/default.aspx.

And if you are combining data across years, definitely check out the technical documentation for analysts. And don't be hesitant to send them an e-mail if you have any question. For example, they can probably quickly tell you how to re-compute the weight variables to reflect that you are using multiple cycles, etc.
