    Merge Panel Data with multiple same year dataset

    Hi All,

    I am trying to merge two datasets. One is a firm ID -year (panel master data). The other dataset (hereafter ECHO dataset) is from the US Government's information of penalties charged to a firm due to environmental violations. So, it can happen that a firm has years when there were no violation but on the other hand, it can also happen that a firm has two or more violations in one year.

    My objective is to merge some variables like "total yearly sanction" (Variable 9 below) into my master data.

    I have generated some variables on the ECHO dataset that I want to merge with my panel master data. In particular, my question is to understand how I could merge the panel data with variable 9.

    Note: I am not sure why long settle year is come as a 2 digit output because in stata it is showing as years like 1980, 1981...

    Well, if the settle year variable were correct, the -merge- would just be:

merge 1:1 f_id settle_year using ECHO
    But something is clearly wrong with the settle_year variable in ECHO (and maybe in master, too?) Since you say it is showing in as things like 1980, 1981, etc., but -dataex- is showing small two-digit numbers, my best guess is that in the course of creating this data set, somebody extracted the year from the date (which, I notice, is a string variable) as the last four characters and then made the egregious error of applying -encode- to it. That would give you the appearance of dates like 1980 when the reality is small one and two digit numbers. So I think you need to re-create the settle_year variable:

gen settle_year = real(substr(settle_date, -4, .))
save ECHO, replace
    Then you can merge as suggested above.

      Thank you Clyde for your helpful comment. The egregious error was committed by me actually. I have followed your suggestion and fixed that. However, I received an error message that I was expecting. "variables f_id year do not uniquely identify observations in the using data"
      I presume it is because ECHO has multiple observations with the same f_id and year so the program cannot identify which one to pick? Practically, this is occurring because same in the ECHO data firms can be fined multiple times a year for violations.
