  • File Association problem when changing from Stata 15 to 16 on WIndows 10

    Hello Stata fellows,

I just recently tried to upgrade my Stata 15 to Stata 16 (both installed on a network drive). Unfortunately I cannot change the file association of Stata do.files and data files from Stata 15 to 16 on my windows 10 computer. Every time I try to open a file it only opens in Stata 15. The only work around is to start Stata 16 and then open the file within Stata. Changing the file association in windows does not work for some reason. Can anyone help?

Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions

    Best, Patrick

    Patrick:
Have you tried opening Stata 16 --> Edit --> Preferences --> Reset file associations ?

Thanks for your suggestion Wouter. I tried, but I have to run the Stata administrative tools to do that and I don’t have the rights to do that since it is installed on a network drive which is used by multiple users. So I think making this change would affect all other users as well.

I solved my problem by making changes to the windows registry :-) after a failed to solve the problem with an assoc command in the cmd prompt.
