I am creating the database to write my master thesis at University.
I downloaded from SDC all data concerning takeovers from 1984 to 2018 and I also have the historical CUSIP 6 digits number for each of the target firms.
Now I need to extract from CRSP stock's data for those firms, but unfortunately I don't have PERMNOs or the NCUSIP or 8 digit CUSIP asked by CRSP.
My professor told me that I have to create on SDC a new "key" adding to the historical 6 digit SDC CUSIP the year of the announcement, download from CRSP all stock's information (including PERMNOs, NCUSIP and CUSIP), create the same "key" with the 6 digit CRSP CUSIP adding the year of the announcement and than "compare" using stata this two databases to find for my companies the PERMNOs. The ultimate goal is to find the PERMNOs for my list of companies.
Do you think that this procedure is correct?
Can I ask you if you know how I can do that on Stata? I am new and not really good with the software. Also if you know guides/videos/books I can use them to follow the procedures and understand the commands I need to use!
