  • from Stata IC to SE

Hi, currently my Stata version is IC. But it seems IC cannot deal with my large data set. When I run PSID data set, Stata IC prompts the error message:
no room to add more variables
Up to 2,048 variables are allowed with this version of Stata. Versions are
available that allow up to 120,000 variables.

Thus, I am wondering I might use Stata SE (not sure)? How to do this transition? Just delete IC and then download Stata SE?

You may observe the different versions of Stata here. Stata SE is the next step up from IC, which may be right for you. Typically this upgrade would require purchasing a license, which could be an upgrade license from Stata/IC to SE or MP.

      Hi Leonardo,

My university has access to Stata, so I don't need to purchase a license by myself. My questions is how to upgrade to SE? Deleting IC and downloading SE?

In order to use Stata SE, your university needs to have access to (i.e., have a license for) Stata SE. You cannot use Stata SE if you or your university do not have a license for Stata SE.

        Edit:

From a more practical point of view, note that the use command allows you to load a subset of variables. Chances are, you are not going to need more than 2,048 variables from the dataset.

With the new frames in Stata 16, there appears to be another way around the limit to the number of variables.

        Best

This is not exactly the topic of your query, but I believe it may be helpful to others: if you have, say, Stata 15.1 flavor IC and want to keep the same version but upgrade to flavor SE (provided you have a license for this, i.e., in the end somenone shall pay for this), the correct way to install is deleting the old one before installing the new one.

That said, we can have different versions in the same computer, no problem.
          Best regards,

          Marcos

            Aha, just update my case.

I delete my IC. Then I download Stata from my campus website. I download MP. But the serial is not applicable to MP. I can only use SE or IC. So now I am downloading again,
