  • Panel SEM

    Dear Stata Users

I am investigating the link between Bank-Performance and Corporate Social Responsibility (where the latter is a binary variable, i.e. 0 and 1) using panel data of 300 banks for 10 years using Stata 12. Looking through the manual as well as the other sources I did not find examples how to use structural equation model (sem) technique for panel data as all of the examples focus on cross-sectional data. The only difference I found so far is that in sem panel data must be changed from long to wide. I was wondering if you can suggest where I can find the examples of using sem for panel data or any suggestions on using panel sem would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hurshid,

I think that you're looking for the latent growth curve model (e.g. [SEM] example 18 in the manual). Depending on how you measure CSR (once at baseline/endpoint or repeatedly over time), you can extend the simple model to a parallel growth curve model where you correlate the growth factors. There are certainly other approaches as well (e.g. cross-lagged models). Just remember that generalized SEM (-gsem-) was not implemented in Stata 12, which implies that you cannot study binary outcomes unless you upgrade to 13.
