  • Using asdoc to export two-sample t-test by groups and other summary statistics

    Hi,

    I would like to export summary statistics (two sample t-test of the difference of the two groups, as well as mean and sd by groups) using asdoc for a number of variables (lnassets roi lev cagr vol cfvol lncash delist), based on the dummy variable BClaw. BClaw is equal to 1 if the state that firm (gvkey) is incorporated in (incorpn) has passed a certain law. Here is an example of my data:

    The code I have been trying it with looks as follows:
    Code:
    asdoc ttest lnassets, by(BClaw) label stat(mean sd dif) save(sumtable.doc)
    asdoc ttest roi, by(BClaw) rowappend label stat(mean sd dif)
    asdoc ttest lev, by(BClaw) rowappend label stat(mean sd dif)
    asdoc ttest cagr, by(BClaw) rowappend label stat(mean sd dif)
    asdoc ttest vol, by(BClaw) rowappend label stat(mean sd dif)
    asdoc ttest cfvol, by(BClaw) rowappend label stat(mean sd dif)
    asdoc ttest lncash, by(BClaw) rowappend label stat(mean sd dif)
    asdoc ttest delist, by(BClaw) rowappend label stat(mean sd dif)
    which returns the error message:
    asdoctable(): 3301 subscript invalid
    <istmt>: - function returned error
    r(3301);
    if I simply do
    Code:
    asdoc ttest lnassets, by(BClaw)
    it seems to work but the output contains a lot more information than I want.
    Ideally I would do the above with a loop, and if possible clustering the s.e.'s around incorpn, as such:
    Code:
    foreach i in lnassets roi lev cagr vol cfvol lncash delist{
    asdoc ttest `i', by(BClaw) rowappend label stat(mean sd dif)
    }
    But I would be happy if I could get the first version to work. Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks

    I have modified asdoc to include support for two sample ttest. Please install the beta version by
    Code:
    net install asdoc, from(http://fintechprofessor.com) replace

      Dear Dr.Attaullah Shah:
      I really appreciate your sharing! asdoc is really convenient and useful. But I met a problem when using asdoc.
      When I enter the code " asdoc sum varlist, append", it is working well. But when I enter " asdoc tab (or tab1) varlist, append", it cannot work and warns " option matrow() not allowed ".Would you please tell me how to work out this?
      Thank you!

        Please type the exact command that you used on your Stata. Also, please post a sample of your data using dataex (SSC). What version of asdoc are you using, you can check it by
        Code:
        which asdoc

          Oh, thank you Dr.Attaullah Shah. I've worked out it. It seems that the variables must be defined as numeric when using asdoc.
          For example, sex is a nominal variable which we defined as "0" and "1". But when using asdoc, it requires that we define the var sex as numeric, and then use the code: asdoc tab sex, append. Then it works. On the contrary, when I defined sex as string, it does't work.
          Thank you!

            I think I have worked on it and included a fix, that will be part of the next update.

                Dear Dr.Attaullah Shah, in case of two mean tests (paird), we get only one digit for t-value and p-value. how can we increase the number of decimals to make p-value for example p=0.1020 in place of p=.1? I gave the following example
                Code:
                 sysuse auto, clear
                 asdoc ttest mpg==price, replace

                  Anagaw Derseh asdocx allows to set different decimal points for each column. Further, it allows to set different thousand seperators, report command instead of dot for decimal places, and use trailing and leading zeros. You may want to explore other details of asdocx here https://fintechprofessor.com/asdocx/ .

                    Hi everyone,

                    I would like to export my t-Test results to Word using the asdoc command , but it failed as often I tried. I installed the ado here

                    Code:
                    net install asdoc, from(http://fintechprofessor.com) replace
                    (I tried the asdoc version from ssc, but it was the same problem.)
                    To do the ttest, I first used this command:

                    Code:
                    ttest bildung, by (w5_eng), if el_yn == 1
                    And it worked well. But when I added asdoc

                    Code:
                    asdoc ttest bildung, by (w5_eng), if el_yn == 1
                    I got this error message: invalid 'sep'
                    On this page https://fintechprofessor.com/2018/12...d-using-asdoc/ someone had the same problem and it was suggested, to change the command to this:

                    Code:
                    ttest w5_alter if el_yn==1, by(w5_eng)

                    This also worked without asdoc, but with the prefix

                    Code:
                    asdoc ttest w5_alter if el_yn==1, by(w5_eng)

                    I got this error message: 0 1 : operator invalid

                    In this thread someone wrote, that in his case it was because the variable was not specified as numeric. But in my data it is!

                    Is there anybody, who knows a solution? It would be great if someone could answer soon, because I have to hand in my bachelor thesis next week.

                    I hope, I could describe my problem understandalbe. If you need any more information to help me please aks! I am new in Stata and new here, so I don`t know exactly what is necessary to wirte when posting a problem.
                    And maybe someone could tell me how to import this stata commands like above in the thread instead of copying in to the textfield? That would be nice.

                    And sorry about my English, I`m very untrained.
                    Best regards from Germany
                    Naemi
                    P.S.: I use the current version, Stata 17

                      Let me check it. In the meanwhile, if you can post a dummy data that can be used with the above code.

                        Hello Dr. Shah,

                        thank you for your fast message. I`m sorry, I do not really know what you mean: how can I post dummy data? Do you refer to the Stata output or examples from my dataset? I`m afraid I`m not allowed to pass them.
