PS. Here's another suggestion, important to me at least:

Being able to hit Command-Return (or Ctrl-Return on Windows) and Stata runs whatever code is on the current line and then moves the cursor down to the next line. No need to select text.

Actually,stata editor works with stata 17 (and I think stata 16) :

I followed the step for the vs code installation here and it fixed the python error.

But I'm quite sure the only required steps is to activate stata automation like explain here
