viewing chinese characters--stata 13 on a MAC

I haven't been able to find a solution to viewing chinese characters on a mac with stata 13. I tried following the STATA manual https://www.stata.com/manuals/dunicodetranslate.pdf by using unicode translate, but I get the output of "unrecognized command: unicode". Any solutions?

Unicode support in Stata was introduced in Stata 14 and onwards, so if you are using Stata 13, you should not try to translate a file into unicode.
But releases before Stata 14 can also handle Chinese characters, in different encoding.
Before anyone can help you, it would be good if you explain what type of data you are working with.
Is it a Stata .dta file that someone sent you? Or are you importing from somewhere?
Do you now what the encoding of original file is?
