  • opening .sav files in stata

    Hello,

I have been using a .dta file for my analysis, but I had to ditch it last minute as it did not have many variables that could be helpful to extend my dissertation.

With only one month to submitting my dissertation, I have finally gotten access to a data file that has all the variables I need but unfortunately it is a .sav file.

I have never used spss and I do not have access to stat transfer.
Is there any way I can open the file (it is 10 mb) in stata?

See http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/mult_pk...SS_toStata.htm. I.e. conversion possible if you have access to SPSS (and not hard to do!)
Look also at usespss on SSC -- it'll work if you have 32bit Windows: ssc desc usespss
    Find a friend with Stat/Transfer

Install R -> install the package 'haven' -> export to dta -> read in Stata

You may also use the (free!) PPSP for Windows just to open the .sav files. Then, you may click on "save as" and select the file you wish, and finally you may import this file into Stata.
        Best regards,

        Marcos
