  • Stata 14 must be run as administrator to install update

In case any Windows users have problems installing the update for Stata 14 released today, Stata must be run as administrator before the update can be installed (right-click on the Stata 14 shortcut, click "Run as administrator"). There is no indication in Stata that this is required. Stata 13 prompted users without administrator rights for an administrator password after update all was entered.

We sent the following reply to Friedrich Huebler through Stata Technical Support...

The process for obtaining updates between Stata 13 and Stata 14 has not changed. The only thing I can think of is that User Account Control (UAC) has been disabled on your machine. Stata uses UAC and makes a request through Windows for elevated privileges so the update can be performed. That request will cause Windows to prompt for password/login credentials if necessary.

I recommend that you check your UAC settings in the Windows Control Panel...

Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts

... and select 'Change User Account Control settings'. The recommended setting is 'Default' which is the next to highest position.
We will post a followup if we have any information to add.

I too had to manually run Stata 14 SE Windows 32 bit as administrator to complete the update. I have not changed windows settings since installing the new version of Stata. I previously had upgraded v13 multiple times, getting a prompt for elevated privileges each time. My UAC settings are at the default level.
I have windows ultimate x64 running with all current updates. .

32 bit Stata 14 on Windows will not ask for credentials when doing an update. Subsequently Stata will fail with an r(608) if the user does not have write permission in the installation directory. If this happens, follow Friedrich Huebler's and George Hoffman's advice and right-click on the Stata 14 shortcut, then click "Run as administrator".

We will get this fixed and released in an upcoming update.
