  • Control-C or equivalent to escape out of a long output in the Results window

    Hi Everyone,

I'm not entirely sure how to phrase my question, so I'll give an example. If I type:

    codebook, compact

on my 600 variable dataset then the output is over 600 lines long, which I have to scroll through in the Results window to see entirely. If I decide to change my mind after the command is executed, and do not want to waste any time scrolling in order get back to the prompt, is there something I can type to skip the rest of the output and return me to the prompt immediately? In a unix terminal window I can type control-c and it works, but it doesn't work here. I am using Stata-11 on a mac.

    Thanks in advance!

did you try clicking on the "break" key (above the results window)? note that if this happens to you often you should leave "more" on

Thanks Rich! I feel silly...Yes, the break key did work. I'm so used to doing everything by command I didn't even think to look for a button. Thanks again!

Chapter 10 of the Getting Started with Stata PDF (which I recommend reading cover to cover) says that typing q will also terminate output when --more-- is displayed. The break button will, however, interrupt any Stata process, not just output to the log. So if you are trying fit a model that seems to be iterating forever, the break button is the answer. Also, help keyboard provides further information on keyboard shortcuts: if you are on a Windows system, it appears that the Break key on your keyboard may accomplish the same thing as Stata's Break button.

Thanks! Typing q also worked - and much quicker too. My version of Stata crashes every time I type the help command (unless it's the very first thing I do), so I tend to just look up things online and/or in the pdf. Sometimes hard to find the right search terms and I end up wasting time....That's where this forum has been coming in very handy.
